Beckmead Trust Expands Intergenerational Work Experience Programme Across Croydon
The Beckmead Trust is delighted to announce the expansion of its innovative intergenerational Work Experience (WEX) programme, following the success of an exciting new partnership with Brookhurst Court Extra Care Scheme.
Launching in September 2026, the programme will bring together students from Beckmead College with residents living in extra care housing settings across the Croydon borough. The initiative has already generated significant enthusiasm, with plans now in place to extend the partnership to additional care settings in South Norwood, New Addington and Norbury.

The programme has been designed to create meaningful opportunities for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to develop employability skills, confidence and independence while building positive relationships with older members of the community.
Research consistently shows that intergenerational projects can have a powerful impact on wellbeing, reducing social isolation and fostering a greater sense of belonging for participants of all ages. Through regular visits and shared activities, Beckmead students and residents will have the opportunity to learn from one another, exchange experiences and develop lasting connections.
Students will undertake work experience placements across a range of vocational areas, including:
- Hospitality & Catering
- Painting & Decorating
- Carpentry
- Multi-Skills
- Gardening and Grounds Maintenance.
Activities will include tending flower beds, planting herbs, maintaining outdoor spaces, repairing facilities and supporting community events.
Alongside vocational learning, participants will enjoy a range of social and creative activities such as tea and cake mornings, quiz sessions, seasonal celebrations, music and singing events, art projects, poetry readings and community exhibitions.
The programme offers significant benefits for everyone involved. Students will gain valuable communication, social and employability skills while building confidence and self-esteem through meaningful community participation. Residents will benefit from increased social engagement, opportunities to share their knowledge and experiences, and enhanced emotional wellbeing through purposeful interaction with young people.
The partnership also strengthens collaboration between education, health and social care services, creating new opportunities for community engagement and shared learning across the borough.
A steering group comprising representatives from Beckmead Trust and partner organisations is already overseeing the planning phase. Feedback from students, residents, families and staff will help shape the programme as it develops, ensuring activities remain meaningful, accessible and beneficial for all participants.
As preparations continue for the September launch, the Trust is excited by the opportunities this partnership presents and looks forward to sharing updates as the programme grows across Croydon.
By bringing generations together through shared experiences, learning and work, the programme embodies Beckmead Trust's commitment to inclusion, community engagement and creating positive futures for every learner.
